Wilsons Detective Agency & Anthony Bryan Intelligence shines a light on Gmail
May of our client liaison managers who work in our 200 + branches around the globe are reporting that many of our corporate and VIP clients are asking –
Is Google’s very popular and widely used Gmail email service safe for work?
The short answer is yes, maybe, for most of us at least, but there are circumstances in which Gmail is not an appropriate work option and when that happens, ABCIPI's Technical Department based in The Hague and Hong Kong can help.
How it works It works more or less like this; · Gmail’s default settings provide fairly robust security. · The data that users see in Gmail are actually encrypted with the industry-standard 128 bit encryption. · Google transmits Gmail data to its users via transport layer security 1.1, also an industry standard. · On the user side, encrypted data is authenticated by the SHA1 cryptographic hash function and eventually decoded by the ECDHE_RSA key exchange mechanism – there you have it!
If this sounds confusing, it’s because we are talking about cryptography and cryptography is incredibly confusing for those of us that don’t do math problems for a living.
Simply put though, Google sends your Gmail information to you in a coded format that only you have the key for and only you can decode - well that is the theory at least.
Unfortunately it’s not true – there are Hackers who now offer fast access to Gmail accounts - if you have the budget. And for those who are in the limelight like celebrities and other people who may be targets, it will be almost inevitable that they will be become a target and they need to be ready!
